October 31, 2008 · Legendary oral historian, author and radio personality Studs Terkel has died at his home in Chicago. He was 96.
Terkel had been in ill health for some time, suffering from various ailments; a close friend, Tony Judge, said his condition worsened precipitously Oct. 30, and he died just before 3 p.m. on Oct. 31.
For nearly half a century, Terkel crisscrossed the country interviewing people from all walks of life about war, their jobs and a variety of other subjects. His conversations with the prominent and the uncelebrated became books that chronicled much of the history of the 20th century.
Terkel often said that America suffers from what he described as a sort of national Alzheimer's disease. So he wrote books such as Working, Hard Times and his Pulitzer Prize winner, The Good War — oral histories of labor, the Great Depression and World War II, respectively — to help jog the nation's memory.
Born on May 16, 1912, in New York, Terkel's given name was Louis. But like "Scarface" Al Capone, he moved to Chicago and he picked up a tough-guy nickname — which he borrowed from the lead character in James Farrell's 1930s Studs Lonigan trilogy.

About a week ago in my Political Science class there was a discussion about Aristotle's views on the Rule of the People and Rule of Law. He said the following:
The main point the class came to was that we, as citizens, cannot allow demagogues to control our democracy.
Unfortunately, that is what America and her citizens have allowed the last seven years: a group of political charlatans(downright thugs if you ask me)disguised as elected political leaders of the free world whoring out the nation(after swearing an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States)to gain unlimited power in the Executive Branch, to serve at the whim of Corporate America, the extreme right-wing base of the GOP, and the defense contractors, all through playing on America's fears after the tragic events of 9/11 and the wave of patriotism that followed.
Last night, I posted a blog dealing with The View co-host Elizabeth Hasselbeck introducing Republican Vice Presidential Nominee Sarah Palin at a rally in Tampa Bay, Florida. What struck me wasn't so much the standard talking points she listed, but the moment when she spouted off the flag pin nonsense, saying how the Governor of Alaska wears it everyday with honor, almost implying to the audience of how, once upon a time, Barack Obama said that he did not wear the flag pin becasue as he called it "it became a substitute for real patriotism" and somehow he's not really a patriot like the woman she is introducing.
Mrs. Hasselebeck, it's one thing to passionately defend your candidate. It's another thing to suggest or imply the opponent is somehow unpatriotic for not having the equivalent of a piece of jewelry on their lapel coat. In these uncertain times, the last thing we need is more of the same politics of division and using petty issues such as a damn lapel pin to characterize your opponent Karl Rove and George Bush were infamous for during the last seven years of hell this country has gone through under their watch. We are tired of this divisive politics you, Sarah Palin, John McCain and the RNC are using. We may have different ideas and solutions on what is best for the country, but to say or even imply that one person or candidate is more patriotic than the other only helps feed demagogues and political bullies to divide our nation and its citizens instead of bringing the country together as one.
If Palin's campaign political speechwriters gave you this script to read and introduce to the potential Vice-President, then you should have said that I will not go out there are imply Senator Obama's love of this country. If you happened to write the intro speech yourself, you should be ashamed of yourself for sinking this low to highlight your candidate. You're better than this.

I think today's news is great for one Sarah Palin and have said so on Newshounds and Think Progress. This opens up an office she can run for in 2012 and she could probably win it. Then in 2016 she can run for President and claim experience having been a Governor and a Senator. Do I think she would ever get elected president? No. But this could only help her try. The first U.S. Army Logistics Civil Augmentation Program (LOGCAP) was awarded in 1992, as the first Bush administration (including then-Secretary of Defense Cheney) was leaving office. Four companies competed, and the winner was Brown & Root, as it was known at the time (Halliburton changed the name to Kellogg Brown & Root after an acquisition in 1998). The multi-year contract was in effect during much of the Clinton administration. During those years, Brown & Root did extensive work for the Army under the LOGCAP contract in Haiti, Somalia, and Bosnia; contract workers built base camps and provided troops with electrical power, food, and other necessities.
In 1997, when LOGCAP was again put up for bid, Halliburton/Brown & Root lost the competition to another contractor, Dyncorp. But the Clinton Defense Department, rather than switch from Halliburton to Dyncorp, elected to award a separate, sole-source contract to Halliburton/Brown & Root to continue its work in the Balkans. According to a later GAO study, the Army made the choice because 1) Brown & Root had already acquired extensive knowledge of how to work in the area; 2) the company "had demonstrated the ability to support the operation"; and 3) changing contractors would have been costly. The Army's sole-source Bosnia contract with Brown & Root lasted until 1999. At that time, the Clinton Defense Department conducted full-scale competitive bidding for a new contract.
