State of the Union Thread

Tonight is the 112th Address to the Congress and the Nation, so I, and with the help of The Count, shall live blog President Obama's speech. Join us, won't you?

Edit by Jonathan (5:34 PT): It seems that I shall be alone in blogging about the SOTU. Flipping back and forth between  CNN and MSNBC's kickoff to the big event. A few things:
* Ever since Keith Olbermann left for Current, Rachel Maddow has been a surprisingly good moderator or head honcho for the network.Wolf Blitzer and his team is pretty good as well. Cannot go wrong with either network.
* Is there any reason why the news media has to announce that the President and the First Lady have left the White House? Do we expect the President of the wife to be late to the Capital?

Edit by Jonathan (5:44 PT): In comes Vice President Biden, House Minority Leader McConnell, and other senior members of the Senate.

Edit by Jonathan (5:55 PT): The Speaker has called the Session to order, and now we see Dr. Jill Biden taking her seat.

Edit by Jonathan (5:57 PT): In comes Gabrielle Giffords. Amazing round of applause, and She looks amazing.

Edit by Jonathan (5:59 PT): Now, the First Lady, and the President's cabinet.

Edit by Jonathan (6:05 PT): "Mr. Speaker...the President of the United States!"

Edit By The Count (9:20 CT) This brilliant rebuttal from the Republicans:
RNC Research Obama's State of the Union = just more words. Yes Republicans most speeches are just words. However unlike the previous President at least Barack Obama used real ones.
Edit by Jonathan (7:25 PT):  "So it is with America. Each time I look at that flag, I’m reminded that our destiny is stitched together like those fifty stars and those thirteen stripes. No one built this country on their own. This Nation is great because we built it together. This Nation is great because we worked as a team. This Nation is great because we get each other’s backs. And if we hold fast to that truth, in this moment of trial, there is no challenge too great; no mission too hard. As long as we’re joined in common purpose, as long as we maintain our common resolve, our journey moves forward, our future is hopeful, and the state of our Union will always be strong."

Open Thread Final 4 Thread

It's a very lovely day at least here in the Midwest. I Love this weather. Well Home Ralphyfan! We Missed you. Any thoughts on Unions, Final 4, your gold investments you bought off of Larry Rhodes.

Butler 70 Virginia Commonwealth 62. Difference in the game was Butler has been there and done that before. The experience in this atmosphere showed down the stretch.

UCONN 56 Kentucky 55

So we have the Bulldogs of Butler Vs The Huskies of Connecticut. So it's a National Championship for Dog Lovers.

Brett Favre who was never one of the best 20 Quarterbacks in any of the 6 decades in which he played was voted the 20th best player in NFL history. Even more laughable the fans voted him 6th. I can only imagine that idiots who are constantly jerking off to Mr. over-rated like Boobie Peters voted over and over again

Thanksgiving Open Thread

Just got back from my Brothers where we had a very nice dinner. As I have said before I am no fan of Turkey but the right amount of Gravy makes it's all alright.

Going to go take a nap now. Hopefully I am up in time for The Texas-A&M game. If so I'll do real time thoughts here. If not well...not.

Anyway Open thread for all the good girls and boys.

I tell you I am shocked Mack Brown stop sucking cock long enough to do TV interviews.

Speaking of cock A&M likes to grab cock...

I know what you're thinking wow he grabbed his dick that had to draw a flag. it drew 2. both on Nebraska.

And A&M missed a field goal by about 50 yards.

Mack brown takes the cock out of his mouth to bitch to the officials. ESPN thinks it is funny. No double standard there.

Tony Jerard-Eddie better known as dick grabber leaves game hurt. Unfortunately it doesn't look very serious.

7-0 Fuckers from Austin.

oh somebody just tweeted to me #Jerard-Eddie should be on a local sex offender. Alias: Tony Jerard-Cock Gobbler. #Beebe is his sponsor.

that's a little strong but hey he's the one who likes pulling other dudes junk
Fumble dick grabers

cocksuckers recover

the announcer says

Mack Brown (Texas coach) likes to tweak little things

I said all he has to do to tweak something little is pull down his pants.

Cocksuckers just fumbled it back to the dick grabbers.

Touchdown Dick Grabbers. 7-7.

The posts that are in black are posts I wrote in a PM.

Cocksuckers throw interception on the first play of the second half. 7-7.

Dick Grabbers make a 50 yard field goal. 10-7. Fuck 'em both.

Cocksuckers fumble the ball Dick grabbers recover.

Touchdown Dick Grabbers 17-7.

More penalties tonight against Texas than I have seen called on them all year.

Dick grabbers fumble a punt and the Cocksuckers have some hope.

Touchdown Cocksuckers. 17-14.

And the dick grabbers respond a huge run 24-14. Texas sucks.

Dick grabbers get a punt blocked but Cocksuckers can only manage a field goal 24-17 Dick Grabbers.

Craig "Pony" James just said it's hard to touch the wind with the touch of your balls. That must suck for A&M touching balls is the only way they can judge anything.

Cock grabbers intercept a Cocksucker pass and that may end it. No bowl for Texas?

A&M nearly fumbles and now has to punt with 17 seconds left.

What a perfect way for the Texas Cocksuckers season to end. the dick grabbers punted the ball away the cocksuckers chose to get away from the ball instead of fielding it thus letting the clock run out.

24-17 Texas A&M Dick Grabbers final score.

5-7 Texas Cocksucksers. No bowl for you!

Open Threadsky

Isn't every thread opened? Anywho since Nebraska has done takin care of their bidness on Thursday and thus making this another Saturday we can all breath a lil easier (at least I can) why not have an official open thread?

Anyway to get the ball rolling I just finished reading Buck Owens the biography by Eileen Sisk. The basic premise of the book is that Buck was both a good man and an evil son of a bitch whose dark side was triggered by his lust for wealth and Women In the end he died with plenty of money and had plenty of women so I guess on that end he was successful though it sound as like he died a less than whole man. The book suggests he was Bi-polar and we know he had at least one breakdown after the Death of Don Rich so I believe that claim. As to the rest was he as big a asshole as the book tries to claim? perhaps the Seattle Post Intelligencer said it best

But Owens, for all his fame and fortune, is remembered for his music, not his business acumen, his sexual conquests, or his often-abrasive nature. Many of his songs – whether he wrote ‘em or stole them – have become standards, and his influence stretches far and wide to this day. By blending traditional country with rock ‘n’ roll and making music on his own terms, he charted a course for many artists seeking an alternative to the Nashville establishment. Yet Sisk rushes through the final decades of Owens’ career, the years in which his star power had faded but his artistic legacy solidified, with a scant chapter each, and turns his funeral into a bit of a soap opera.

"Those not familiar with Owens’ life will learn much here, no doubt; Sisk has done her homework, and knows her subject well. It’s too bad he managed to piss her off, though. He was flawed, to be sure, but despite Sisk’s attempts at scandal, he really doesn’t seem too bad, at least in light of the excesses and foibles we’ve come to expect of celebrities these days. And in the end, it remains the music that matters most."

I would recommend the book to Owens fans, at least ones who know what to expect or Country Music historians but I would NOT certainly not accept everything said in it at face value and in the end what counts is the music.

Sunday NFL and Open Thread

NFL Talk or anything you want.

Watching Chicago and Detroit. Bears just stopped on the goal line. Couldn't go 1 yard in 4 plays. Mike Martz is a dipshit.

Wow the Bears win in part on what has to be the dumbest fucking rule in the book. If you cross the goal-line with the ball it is a fucking touchdown. Of course Detroit following up with 2 throws into the endzone with out trying to pick up a first down didn't help.

NFL Draft And Open Thread

Tonight for the first time the 1st round of the NFL Draft is on Thursday night. Any thoughts on the draft or anything else talk about it here.

The first pick from the St. Louis Rams is Chief Sam Bradford

Yup I am a Lions fan!

In the first round, the San Diego Chargers select...RB Ryan Matthews of Fresno State!

Chargers GM A.J. Smith gave up a 1st round pick (no. 28), a 2nd round pick (no. 40), a 4th round pick (no. 126), and LB Tim Dobbins for Matthews. I hope he's good, cause he's got some big shoes to fill.

Late Edit From The Count:

Other than Tim Teblow getting drafted in the 1st round other than say the 4th or 5th where he should have been drafted there were no real huge surprises tonight. I don't think Of course I pissed off good old Captain America by pointing out that the only reason he got picked that high is because he is White and his Mommy made anti-abortion commercial. Too bad Cap.

Game Day And Open Thread Spring Game Edition

VS

For the 3rd year in a row the weather is suppose to be gorgeous with a kickoff temperature around 60 and a high of 66 with bright sunshine. ( now the weather channel says 70) I have been to many of these games and have sat in 90 degrees and 40 and raining. With the wife having to go I was worried that unlike the last two years the weather wouldn't cooperate, it's not like she really wants to go anyway, but it apparently will my payback may not be quite as severe.

Yes it's a scrimmage. Yes you learn almost nothing from it. (Last year we did learn Ndamukong Suh was going to be unblockable. The Whites were up 10-0 after the 2 or 3 series he played then they took him out and the Reds won 31-17.)

Don't expect the QB race to be solved, that wouldn't be fair anyway to Zac Lee.

Once again the teams are split using a draft system wich makes for closer and more entertaining games then we got during the Callahan Era. With Green, Helu and Paul all on the White squad I think they pull out a close win 28-21.

Also Tomorrow The NBA Playoffs start and Kelly Pavlik is fighting so it's a really good day for sports.

Open thread kids. Will have a review of the game probably Sunday. Tomorrow night I may live blog the Celtics game.

Open Thread: Song of the Night

This new segment is for us to get to highlight songs by artists we're currently obessing over at the moment. Tonight's SotN hails from the Land of the Rising Sun, Japan. Yes, the song is sung is Japanese, and no, there's no English subtitles, but one look at this very cute J-Pop (short for Japanese pop) artist, and you won't care much what she's saying. Her name is Namie amuro, and the song is called "Shine More".

Edit From The Count The Count's Song Of The Night For The Hee-Haw in all of us.

Open Thread: Sunday Thoughts

Here's a Sunday Open Thread to share what my Sunday was like:

* Say what you will about acclaimed director and child fucker Roman Polanski, but the man knows how to make a movie. His latest effort, The Ghost Writer, is a knockout political thriller that manages to keep you alert and in suspense until its shocking and gut-punch ending. A ghost writer (Ewan McGregor) is hired to write the memoirs of ex-prime minister Adam Lang (Pierce Brosnan) who's hiding out in America, avoiding potential war crimes back at home for sending enemy combatants to the CIA to be detained without just cause to be tortured. Once arriving at Maratha's Vineyard, nothing is what it seems, as getting to the truth behind Lang's life is as hush-hush as the mysterious death behind behind the writer who came before him. The Ghost knows he's in over his head, as pictures, false dates, and lonely, bitchy housewives begin to take center stage in under three days. I won't dare tell you the rest, only that this movie boasts excellent performances from McGregor, Brosnan, Sex and the City's Kim Catrall, and Tom Wilkenson, but its Olivia Williams as Adam's manipulative wife, who is the standout in this verbal cat-and-mouse thriller.
**** stars out of ****

* I keep getting newsletters from the conservative magazine, Newsmax.com. I don't know why (hell, I didn't even sign up for the bloody thing), but this current newsletter just begged me to ask a question: isn't two unnecessary wars in the Middle East enough?

1. Congress Calls on Obama for Action Against Iran

A letter to President Barack Obama from two unlikely congressional allies urging strong action against Iran has gained wide support on both sides of the aisle.

The letter was originally signed by Democratic Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. of Illinois and House Republican Conference Chairman Mike Pence of Indiana and circulated in late March.

The letter to the president begins, “We are writing you out of our concern that Iran is growing ever closer to nuclear weapons capability, a fact demanding immediate action on the part of the United States . . .

“Iran’s nuclear weapons program represents a severe threat to American national interests. Iran’s acquisition of nuclear weapons could lead to the proliferation of these weapons throughout the Middle East and beyond, destabilizing the global non-proliferation regime and greatly increasing the likelihood of such weapons falling into the hands of terrorists . . .

“It would undercut prospects for peace between Israel and her neighbors, with emboldened Iranian surrogates enjoying the strategic backing of an Iranian nuclear umbrella. And it would pose an existential threat to the State of Israel . . .

“Mr. President, you have stated this issue is a priority for your administration. You have attempted to engage the Iranian regime for over a year. You have gone to the United Nations Security Council in an effort to impose tough new sanctions on Iran. But time is not on our side . . .

“Accordingly, we urge you today to reaffirm boldly and unambiguously that the U.S. can and will prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapons capability. We call on you to fulfill your June 2008 pledge that you would do ‘everything in my power to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.’

“Certainly, one way to begin would be to reverse the practice under which the U.S. government has awarded at least $107 billion over the past decade in federal contracts to companies investing in or doing business in Iran. We urge you to join with those allies who are prepared for action to immediately impose crippling sanctions on Iran . . .

“We can do this by imposing punishing measures on the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, rocking Iran’s banking system, and dramatically impacting Iran’s ability to import or refine petroleum.”

In December, the House approved a measure enabling Obama to ban foreign firms that supply Iran with refined petroleum from doing business in the U.S. The Senate passed its own version of sanctions targeting Iran’s energy sector on Jan. 28.

But as the Insider Report disclosed two weeks ago, Democratic leaders have not taken steps to reconcile slight differences in the House and Senate bills, reportedly because the Obama administration has asked them to hold off so he can maintain “flexibility” in dealing with other countries in confronting Iran.

The letter from Reps. Jackson and Pence concludes: “We urge you to move rapidly to implement your existing authority on Iran and the legislation we send you, and to galvanize the international community for immediate, devastating steps. The hour is late. Now is the time for action.”

The letter quickly gained support from other members of Congress, and by April 1, 76 Democrats and 138 Republicans had signed on to the letter.

“The broad, bipartisan backing reflects a clear-eyed, rock-ribbed commitment in Congress to do what is necessary now to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons capability,” Rep. Jackson told The Hill newspaper.

Another letter with bipartisan congressional support was sent to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton last month, stressing the importance of American-Israeli relations.

“We are writing to reaffirm our commitment to the unbreakable bond that exists between our country and the State of Israel and to express to you our deep concern over recent tension,” the letter begins.

Referring to the announcement during Vice President Joe Biden’s recent visit to Israel that Israel would build 1,600 new housing units in East Jerusalem, the signees state: “We are reassured that Prime Minister Netanyahu’s commitment to put in place new procedures will ensure that such surprises, however unintended, will not recur.”

The letter, dated March 19, was signed by three Democrats — House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer of Maryland; Howard Berman of California, chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs; and Gary Ackerman of New York, chairman of the Subcommittee on the Middle East and South Asia.

Three Republicans also signed the letter: Whip Eric Cantor of Virginia; Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Florida, the ranking Republican member on the Committee on Foreign Affairs; and Dan Burton of Indiana, ranking Republican member on the Subcommittee on the Middle East and South Asia.

The letter to Clinton declares: “We are concerned that the highly publicized tensions in the relationship will not advance the interests the U.S. and Israel share. Above all, we must remain focused on the threat posed by the Iranian nuclear weapons program to Middle East peace and stability.”

Really?! Didn't we learn anything from our previous "adventure" in Iraq that we can't keep policing the world? We're in a recession and we've racked up $12 trillion in debt - I don't think another war is going to help our situation look better.

* A quick comment on self-checkout lanes in grocery stores: they're neither quick, nor efficient. Fix the bugs you've got on those damned things!

* If there's one gripe I have about our National Pastime (besides the faux shock Bud Selig and the MLB display when it's revealed some HOF player took steroids) its that the majority of the games are the same ones we see on Fox and ESPN almost every weekend: Boston, New York, St. Louis, Los Angles, and the other big market sports cities. Don't get me wrong: I love seeing the Red Sox and Yankees take on whoever they're playing, but I swear, its like they have those sports networks in their pockets. While covering the Albert Pujols's and the C.C. Sabathia's of the world, we don't shine a light on some the talented performers in the smaller market teams, like Jorge de la Rosa, who limited Padres batters to 2 hits and 0 runs over 7 innings of work on Friday, as the Rockies beat my beloved (yet oh, so awful) Padres 7-0, or San Diego first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, arguably the most underrated first basemen in the National League, putting up big numbers constantly (he had a .277 avg with 40 home runs and almost 100 runs batted in for 2009) and yet very little mention of the pair from sports analysts. They need to start covering the little guys. Sure the teams suck, but there are bright spots playing for them. And while baseball's at it: bring in salary caps so that every team is on an equal-level playing field.

Edit From The Count: Let the bitching begin about the new color scheme. If you find it too hideus I shall change it but I like Dark. It fits me.

61-59 Duke

Congrat...fuck that...fuck Duke. Talk about anything.

Edit From The Count: A thunder storm. Been a while since we've had one of these. Thunder does not scare me I guess it does some people. I actually find thunder to be oddly relaxing to listen to. Especially the persistent rumbling variety that we are getting. Lighting on the other hand I could do with out.

Another Edit From The Count: Next Month...
This makes up for the release of the very average (at best) Strangers In The Night. Oh an the deluxe edition of September Of My Years do out in September (Duh) will also be outstanding. Looks like no Watertown...sigh.

Final Four And Open Thread

Tomorrow Is the final 4 Butler is playing Michigan State and West Virginia is playing Duke.

Just a few thoughts

Butler is not I'll repeat this and scream it NOT some little David like underdog slewing Goliaths on it's way to a possible championship. Please save your Hoosiers references. Yes Butler is in Indiana yes the championship game in the movie Hoosiers was filmed at Butler's arena no this team is not like the Hickory Huskers. They were picked in the top 10 to start the season they went 32-4 on the season. This is a legit basketball team that may very well be the best team remaining.

Oh and Fuck Duke hard with the Ranger's pencil.

NON Basketball :

I was going to write AVFMA tonight that centered around why I am not posting very much on off topic anymore but got lazy but also I am considering my words as the last time I had an issue with Newshounds as you well remember whether I was right or wrong made no difference since the way in which I responded to it was so awful it pretty made me wrong anyway. I will say this my reasons for getting away from off topic have nothing to do with the mods or guest writers who now write for Newshounds. I believe Ellen, Julie, Priscilla, Alex, Auntie and everyone else are all doing a fabulous job of monitoring Fox News and their works keeps getting better.

Update by Jonathan: Cinderella's going to the Ball. What an amazing run by the Bulldogs of Butler University!

Edit From The Count: While I share in congratulating Butler on their final 4 victory I respectfully disagree with Jonathan on using the term "Cinderella" This is a damn good basketball team and has been all year.

Now on to game #2...

The Policy Of This Blog

All 3 people who post on this blog are responsible for what they post.

What I post is my opinion.

What Jonathan posts is his opinion

What ET Posts is her opinion.

None of us are responsible for what the other person posts.

Nobody here makes any money from this blog. ( not even sure where that even came from)

IF I feel anything Jonathan or ET has posted is somehow not appropriate I will delete it. I think I have done that 1 time. I have erased my own posts on many occasions.

I will say what I want to say on this blog. If I say something that the other two people find inappropriate I would consider their opinion and make a choice and most likely agree to erase the post. I will not let some fool like Nipigon tell me what I can or can not say here. If he wants to start a blog say what he thinks about me and set the rules he can knock himself out.

I also can decide who I do not want leaving comments here. Not sure why I have to defend this but it seems I always have to. Again if Nipigon wants to start a blog and rip me with out me being allowed to say a word fine by me.

If your posts consist of calling the other 2 people who post here Sexist or Racists names you don't get to post here.

If your posts consist of long rambling nonsense about your online ministry you don't get to post here.

If you leave post after post after post that neither make sense nor contain anything of substance YOU do not get to post here. I do not understand why Newshounds tolerates this but they do.

I DO NOT.

Open Thread

The 2010 Winter Olympics start tomorrow I think.

Can't say that I am at all interested but hey good luck to all.

America's greatest living President was hospitalized today but the good news is Bill Clinton is supposedly doing quite well. That's good to hear.

Great segment on Hawai'i's health care tonight on the Daily Show.

The NBA All Star Game is this weekend in Dallas which is currently under 8 inches of snow.

With all do respect to my Celtics friends the NBA all star game is only marginally better than the horrifying Pro-Bowl.

Baseball tonight started running again on ESPN that makes me wanna cry

Anyhoo thread is open.

Late Edit by Jonathan: The games begin with a tragic loss today:

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — A men's Olympic luger from the country of Georgia died Friday after a high-speed crash during training. IOC president Jacques Rogge said the death hours before the opening ceremony "clearly casts a shadow over these games."

Nodar Kumaritashvili lost control of his sled, went over the track wall and struck an unpadded steel pole near the finish line at Whistler Sliding Center. Doctors were unable to revive the 21-year-old luger, who died at a hospital, the International Olympic Committee said.

That is so sad to hear. I hope there will be some form of tribute to Kumaritashvili during the opening ceremony tonight.
