Let me tell you why I don't have that fear Sergei. Because the real world is a saner place than these here internets. Though it's catching up it still has a long way to go. Yes there are acts like what happened today in Knoxville done by idiots spurred on by morons but they are still the vast vast vast minority. You mention several of the most moronic pieces of shit that we have ever dealt with in your posts but you know that those 5 names are all the work of one or two people and if you walked up behind them and yelled boo there would be shit to clean up for a week.
This was one chickenshit coward with a mental disorder. I do not even blame the right-wing blowhards whose books he was supposedly reading. If not them than something else would have set him off. We may be politically divided but we are not Iraq by a long shot. Look at my view of the world and where I live for a perfect example. This may come as a surprise but I function quite well believing what I believe here and I get along very well ( for the most part) with others who do not agree with me that I have to live with and work with on a daily basis.

One last thing on this. Here in Omaha we had a random shooting of an African American girl after the NFC Championship game because the Giants beat the Packers and in some fools mind that meant the Black team beat the White team with help of the officials.
The truth is that Son Of A Bitch was sick and would have snapped at something, anything. It just so happened to be a football game. That's the way I feel about this clown. They can blame his reading material all they want to but he would have snapped no matter what. he was obviously sick. I honestly think the rash of sick minds we have seen in the last few years is more a sign that our health care mental and physical has failed us than it is we are headed towards a religious and political civil war.

Unfortunately, it is very possible for this kind of thing to snowball. Could a civil war erupt overnight? No, of course not. However, consider this possibility:
This guy attacks the UU church in Knoxville. He inspires some other conservative nut to do something similar. At this point, a liberal nut comes to the conclusion that liberals are under attack and retaliates. Note that so far we have only used three nuts, and that the third was not quite as nutty as the first two. Three nuts out of three hundred million Americans is, as you say, a "vast vast vast minority". However, now that there has been an act of violence against conservatives, all those conservative nuts who had been thinking there might be a civil war in the works but were not nutty enough to make the first move come to the conclusion that the war is starting and enter the fray. Let's say that there are fifteen of these people — still a tiny minority of the population. This in turn would set off their fifteen or so liberal counterparts. Let's say that this all happens over the course of about a month. Even though just one ten millionth of America's population would be involved, every several days news of another attack would be on the front page. This i turn would convince the people who were not quite as nutty as the last group, and so on and so forth.
This is pretty much what happened in Iraq. Iraq had been a pretty non-sectarian place. People didn't really care whether you were Shia or Sunni. Then, the most radical Sunni group, al-Qaeda, attacked a very prominent Shiah holy place. While the vast majority of Shiah called for restraint, the most radical groups retaliated, destroying numerous Sunni mosques. This in turn caused Sunni groups other than al-Qaeda to retaliate, and soon the country was engulfed in civil war.

I hope we're all too reasonable at heart for incidents like this to snowball out of control. But I'd be lying if I said I wasn't worried that we may be altogether too close to that "tipping point."
If the country were not so divided politically right now, I would agree with you and the Count, ET. However, I am tending to see Sergei's logic. I too, have seen this same pattern before in civil disturbances. With a civilian population so polarized, all it takes is a small spark or two to fan the flames of civil war. Remember our first civil war. A small number decided to break away, and attacked a federal fort. This in turn created a cascade effect in which others who were decidedly more level headed, decided to do what had been discussed, but had been up to that point unthinkable.
Even the biggest of avalanches are started by the smallest of pebbles.
