Reasonable Discussion On Obama's Supreme Court Nominee

Sonya Sotomayer. Honestly before a few days ago I never heard of her. Or if I had I didn't take note. I do not know what her views are but I do know that some of the most obnoxious and ignorant people in this country seem to dislike her that works in her favor. One thing I do not understand why is it that the media and Democrats never raise the same level of noise about the right wing activist judges that Republicans nominate? You know the ones who are far more biased and activist than the moderates Democrats nominate. Even Harriet Myers didn't get dropped because she was a right wing hack. She got dropped because she was a hack.

It seems to me to be all ad hominem all the time, right at the moment. Less about her judicial record - of which she has more to look back to than any other nominee in more than a half-century - and more about whether she's a "racist" (because, you know, if you've been nominated to a body that has been dominated by white males, you must therefore have it in for white males overall), or "stupid" (because it's ever so easy to graduate at the top of your class from Princeton, as opposed to, say, some really academically rigorous institution like Arizona State...), or suffering from PMS (because, of course, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sandra Day O'Connor have been such bloody DIVAS at that time of the month...).

The funniest part of this to me is to see Karl Rove one moment questioning this jurist's intellect and in the next uttering the unwitting truism that he knows some idiots who have graduated from Ivy League schools. (NOT at the top of the class, of course, but we'll leave that aside, for now, for pity...) Out of the mouths of babes.

I think the administration has made a well-reasoned choice and that their above-the-fray attitude to the current feeding frenzy will serve them well. As the extreme RW froths and spews their nonsense, they will only further alienate GOP moderates who recognize inflammatory rhetoric for what it is and want to set their sights on getting re-elected in 2010. It all fuels the wingnuts' own schism and marginalization.

She'll be confirmed, and the rant until, during and after that event will only hurt the extreme right.
