Actually one does not have to involve the soul, one could sentience to determine the ontological and moral status of an unborne and that is a neurological question, not a theological one. Atheists can be opposed to abortion (and it is strange that many on the left feel that a scumbag like Tookie Williams is somehow human but an unborne child is not.)

I have no problem with stem cell research - I cannot see a stem cell (or any other cell) as sentient. The only reason I mention sentience is because I am pro-critter and given that one cannot argue - for examle - that a dog is as intelligent as a person - the issue of sentience becomes vital in protecting animals.
