Massive Earthquake Hits Japan

Tokyo (CNN) -- An 8.9-magnitude earthquake hit northern Japan on Friday, triggering tsunamis and sending a massive body of water filled with debris that included boats and houses inching toward highways.

The epicenter was 373 kilometers (231 miles) away from the capital, Tokyo, the United States Geological Survey said. But residents there felt the tremors.

The quake rattled buildings and toppled cars off bridges and into waters underneath. Waves of debris flowed like lava across farmland, pushing boats, houses and trailers toward highways.

Nerve-wracking! Nothing so far for BC but I'm monitoring the weather alerts before I turn in. We'd be on the trailing edge of anything rolling in, here on the eastern side of Vancouver Island, but the things it could play havoc with are legion.

I take it back. Alert just expanded to include the whole of the West Coast clear to Alaska. We're on quite high ground but I'm worries about the junior school campus - it's right at sea level overlooking Oak Bay Marina.

The tsunami wave rolled up to San Diego around 8:40 this morning, about a 1-2 foot wave was reported.
