What's going on with with the NH Mains?

I just don't get it. I used to go on there for some good discussions about Fox News and the fuck-ups of the Bush Administration, but now the damn blog has dissolved into a saloon overrun with drunken fools and bar fights. I rarely visit anymore because of this, but it sucks. The Moderators of that site all do great work (Ellen is perhaps my favorite, for the sole fact she has to put up with the likes of Hannity, and it takes a iron-clad person to watch the prick day-in and day-out) and I enjoy reading their posts.

Can someone please fill me in as to what the hell happened to Newshounds?

Oh wow now you know this didn't come from me. :) Anyway I hate the new policy. And I think it's solves nothing.

So what is their new policy, exactly?

The Trolls have free reign to type what ever they please and any regular who answers will be banned.

I honestly don't like the way the Mains are shaping up - it's in large part why I just Don't Go There any more.

IMO, if you're going to take on moderating a politically-charged blog, you'd better be prepared to tolerate some major-league back-and-forth swatting amongst your devotees. Before NewsHounds OT it was a regular thing on the mains. Troll-stomping was kind of a sport, enthusiastically engaged in.

I understand where the Mods are coming from - it can't be fun to clean up all our collective debris - but at the same time, the controversy breeds traffic, engagement and interest.

It becomes a tradeoff between reader engagement and moderator convenience.

I guess I would like to see the emphasis on reader engagement. I mean...does it refer worse on the mods or the trolls if the trolls' nastier posts stand? I can't see that it dings the mods. The posters bear the brunt of what they say, in the end.

On the whole I would like to see everything lighten up somewhat, but if registration settles in that will be OK too.
