Sen. Ben Nelson (D-NE) continues to be a scold to the liberals in his party. Before a crowd of over 200 gathered at a senior center in Nebraska, Nelson said health care reform ought to pass with 65 votes--a feat which would require at least five Republicans to break with their party.

"I think anything less than that would challenge its legitimacy," he said.

Nelson didn't go so far as to say that he'd oppose a bill that had less than 64 other votes. But he did say he disagreed with the party's legislative approach to the issue.

"We need to get started by controlling costs and need more time to figure out how to pay for extended coverage," he told the Lincoln Journal Star. "Public debate can occur in the context of an election."

In fairness to Nelson, President Obama did not run on a platform that included an individual mandate--so it could plausibly be argued that the public hasn't officially weighed in on the question of universal health care. But he did run on a public option...

This Is Earl Benjamin Nelson and he's a Democrat (not really) from Nebraska. Earl is an embarrassment to the state and to the Democratic Party. Now with Arlen Septic calling himself a Democrat Earl is no longer the shittiest Democrat in the senate. he is second shittiest. Earl was one of 20 chicken shit Democrats who voted against capping the interest rates from Credit cards at 15%.

Earl is also against Obama's health care proposals.

Nelson’s problem, he told CQ, is that the public plan would be too attractive and would hurt the private insurance plans. “At the end of the day, the public plan wins the game,” Nelson said. Including a public option in a health plan, he said, was a “deal breaker.”

Earl also likes to block the President's nominees.

Roll Call reports that conservatives look poised to successfully block the nomination of Dawn Johnsen to head the White House Office of Legal Counsel (OLC). Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) declared that his hands were tied without the assistance of a few Republican votes:

Senators opposing Johnsen include new Democrat Arlen Specter (PA), who announced his opposition to Johnsen on the day he decided to switch parties, though he has yet to explain why he opposes her. Sen. Ben Nelson (D-NE) has said he “is concerned about her outspoken pro-choice views on abortion.” Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) insists that Johnsen “has not demonstrated the seriousness and necessary resolve to address the national security challenges we face.”

Ben...err...Earl need not worry about what I think of him. His chickenshit politics guarantee him a re-election in this state. That and the scary right-wing hacks that run against him. I am beginning to wonder if Earl isn't paying the likes of Pete Ricketts to run against him. Anyway I will not vote for him again.
