Ray Price 1926-2013

Though Jack Greene had the nicknamed the Jolly Greene Giant had a wonderful voice and his string of hits in the late 60's including some country standards like There's goes my everything and statue of a fool was impressive. It's Jones and Price who were truly the "Giants" That's not a shot at Jack whom I am also a fan of. George Jones was the soul of country music. Country Music was his love. His taste in music unashamedly ran from country to country and back to country and if you want to tell me he was the best ever at it you'll get no argument from me.

But Price's influences went beyond Hank Williams and Bob Wills. To the likes of Sinatra, Crosby and Cole. Price's first big hits Please Release me Crazy Arms are country standards. Any song covered by Patsy Cline, Jerry Lee Lewis and Louis Armstrong has to be great right? Of curse then followed a slew of Country standards City Lights, Heartaches by the Number etc. In 1963 he recorded what is considered the gold standard of Honkey-tonk albums Night Life. By the mid 60's he begun to evolve in to a more polished balladeer. By the 70's and his recording of For The Good Times his music had evolved enough that he was actually physically attacked at many personal appearances.

In terms of record sells his "snub" of country music didn't cost him. His records sold better than they ever had. In terms of his standing in the community of Country critics it cost him dearly. He wasn't elected to the country music hall of fame until 1988 when he famously said "about damn time"

At the time of his passing when Country music bears almost no resemblance to what it once was his career decisions have been more than justified. Today those records that once angered some are now regarded as Country music at it's finest. I love the Jack Greenes and George Jones of the world. Jones especially is a favorite and for sure their likes will never be seen again. Their legacy some of the greatest music ever recorded. But the Ray Prices, Jim Reeves and Patsy Clines of the world, the folks who left behind the twang, hay stacks and went "uptown" while keeping their country roots were the greatest talents on earth.

Part of the backlash against Price in the 70's came because some felt he was acting as if he was "too good for Country Music." Well I doubt that was the case but if it was...you couldn't really argue with him could you?

Happy Birthday Eileen. We Miss You Everyday.

I think it could be said that in many ways these have been times that have tried my soul. In what was in an all too short a span of time the presence of 4 beautiful souls have been taken from us. I say this in no way to disparage the memory of any of these 4 beautiful people all you need to know about their greatness, love and understanding is that they excepted The Count as a friend. No easy to task. But the passing of Eileen Turri was one that I have taken especially hard.

Such an intelligent, beautiful, loving soul. I have said many times I was in nearly in awe of her. The way she carried herself her amazing understanding and intelligence. I have had my own share of demons and issues in the past year. I do not doubt that losing her all to soon as well as the passing of such wonderful people as Kimberlee, Jon, and Donna have played a role in whatever It was that I was going through this spring and summer. I also have no doubt that had Eileen been here she would have said in her stern but loving way...You're better than this it's time to get on with your life. And then of course she would have stood by you the whole time as you did just that.

I don't fully know Eileen's personal stance on issues of Spirituality. I do know that even if she personally wouldn't identify herself as one Christians could do so much worse to find a role model on how to conduct their lives than Eileen. However I do know where I stand on such issues after a fashion. I will not close by saying God Bless Eileen Turri. I will just close by saying God blessed me for having known Eileen Turri.

 I am a believer. Many of you are not I  know and that is perfectly fine. It is an individual choice. I am not a believer to judge, preach, save or to pass judgement on anyone with the exception of one person, myself. Especially the save part. A belief in  something better as a reward for surviving our earthly travel is what has saved me from me on so many occasions. And for that reason I choose to believe in my Lord and savior.

I don't know what became of Kyle Ann nor do I care. Honestly I had forgotten about writing about her 5 years ago. But I can tell you her blog seems to be gone. What became of her I have no idea. I sure hope I didn't offend her though because that would be terrible.

Do I have some questions about Homosexuality? Honestly? Yes. Especially in men but I am sure there are things that I do that a homosexual man would  also question and rightly so. Bottom line. The View From My Ass

For about 23 minutes about in the 80's? 90's? 00's? I attended the University of Nebraska Omaha, Or if you prefer UNO or if you are tired of your team being treated like you are Nebraska-Lincoln's little disabled brother just plain Omaha.

I am not a fan of the schools athletics and haven't been since they beat Augustana in football and then decided to bill themselves as "Omaha's" football team a ludicrous motto made even more so by the fact that Omaha loved UNO football so much it stood by and let out a collective yawn when it was announced Omaha's football team was a football team no more. Omaha , are you happy Trev? decided to move it's sports program up to division 1 a move which brought about the death of the football program.

The better competition level coupled with the fact that UNO was moving  into the brand new Ralston Arena was enough reason for me to purchase season tickets to UNO Basketball. My seats are at end of a side but on Row A the front row. The Mascot often makes the rounds in front of us getting high fives and trying to get the crowd going. Kids often come down with their parents to high-five or hug the mascot which I have no issue with. I am on an isle and it can be done with out interfering with the crowd. Friday the crowd was officially 2200 people and using my own judgement I would say that was about right. Tonight they could not have had 500 people in the arena. BUT...

The national anthem was song by kids from an elementary school. They were little, cute and hell Steven Tyler couldn't have sang the national anthem as well as they did in his best dreams. But after they sang they apparently had no adult supervision. If there was any they were no where to be found. Shortly after halftime The little...um...shits began to congregate in row A. section 116. The only other two people in the row with me gave up 3 minutes into the half and left. I waited a few more minutes until the crowd of children got larger and larger, their screams got louder an louder and their behavior got worse and worse. I finally gave up and moved 4 rows. The "security" a 60+ year old man sitting on the floor sat there with his fist up his ass and did not a thing.

Midway through the second half a UNO player directly in front of the congregation of little shitkickers suffered a serious injury and fell to the court but before doing so he kicked the ball Into the stands with his good leg picking up a Technical foul and nearly doing the world a favor as it came with in inches of taking out about 5 kids. Friday I politely cheered on both teams as honestly I didn't care who won but by the second half tonight I was so disgusted with the kids and the lack of adult supervision I was solidly rooting for St. Mary and will root for UNO from here on out.

UNO: Judging by the crowd tonight people aren't beating down doors to see your product and if tonight was any indication of what kind of experience the costumer can expect they won't be anytime soon. Nobody wants to spend good money (UNO tickets are more expensive than UNL Tickets) to watch 10 year old children take a break from accidentally kicking you to run around and scream.

Parents or Adult supervision: Where were you? Don't tell me you were keeping an eye on kids. I was looking around to the other people in the stands and the few that were there were texting on their cellphones the whole damn game. The one time I saw a parent a Mother came down and told her daughter they were leaving with about 7 minutes left to go. The kid said No I am staying until the end. The Mother turned around I shit you not and sat back down. I find it nearly unconscionable in a time when you are forever hearing about kids being abducted, kidnapped, and raped that parents or adult supervisors, (there had to be somebody from the school right?) Would allow the children to run around at a public event unsupervised .But hey if you had watch your kids then you couldn't bullshit with your friends over beers and text your buddies right? Just because they're your kids doesn't mean they have to ruin your enjoyment of the game. Let them ruin somebody elses.

Oh as for the game? St. Mary 96 UNO, Nebraska-Omaha, Omaha 86. Kinda sweet Justice don't ya think?

Don't Cry For Green Bay Argentina. Cry For The Game

NFL Fans are rightfully outraged over lousy officiating but for all the wrong reasons

Are you outraged because of the officiating from the replacement referees over the last 3 weeks? Good! Are you just now outraged because you think the last bad call of a night of a thousand bad calls cost the Green Bay Packers? Go blow it out your butt.

 Lost in the outcry over the game Monday night is the fact that much like the game Sunday night and well, every other game the last 3 weeks, the entire game was called poorly. Those final few bad calls at the end that everybody is so outraged about is just a symptom of a much larger ailment. These replacement officials are not qualified to the job being asked of them to do.  Did The Packers did robbed last night? Yes but so did Seattle. All of America’s pro football fans got robbed last night.  But Would the last play not have happened would there still have been such an outcry over a prime time game that was horribly officiated for the second night in a row?

With all of the post game outrage over the games ending and a blown call that went against Green Bay why was nobody mentioning the fact that Green Bay got their go ahead touchdown off of a series of blown calls that went against Seattle? And If all of the Green Bay players had spent half the energy on the football field that they spent on twitter afterword would the game even have come down to that final play? Which of the refs gave up 8 sacks in the first half? Funny enough it's Green Bay's offensive lineman who for much of the night looked as incompetent as the referees who are whining the loudest.

Nobody is going to argue that this game wasn't horribly officiated nor should they unless they are nuts or so beaten down by society that they don't question anything. And yes there should be real outage over the job these officials are doing, aren't doing, or are not capable of doing. But the outrage shouldn't be over the last play, outcome, or who won or who lost the game. The outrage should be over the damage not having the regular officials is doing to the game at large. I've seen games where one team got screwed over another by officials and have been told to quite crying about it. THIS WAS NOT ONE OF THOSE GAMES. Green Bay had 10 penalties for 127 yards and Seattle had 14 penalties for 118 yards. If that's attempt to screw one team it was a pretty half-assed attempt even by these replacement referee’s standards. Both teams got jobbed tonight. New England and Baltimore both got jobbed last night. And we the fans have gotten jobbed every-night and will continue to get jobbed until an agreement with the regular officials is reached.

And finally if Green Bay, New England or any other teams and their twitter brigades really want to put an end to replacement officials they could and here is how they could do it. You say no more and go out and stand on the picket line with the officials. I guarantee you if players sent a message by passing up a paycheck and costing the NFL real money by not being able to stage it's product this strike would end tomorrow. But do you think that even with all of the outrage currently being displayed by the players that they would take such a drastic and real, meaningful step? No? Me neither. They'd rather take their chances that the other team is going to be the last team to be jobbed by a 3rd grade teacher whose main officiating experience comes from calling games for Wabash University. And what the hell, if it's their team who has the call go against them well then there is always your iphone and your twitter account waiting for you to complain all night afterword.

An Independence Day List. 10 Favorite Things That Have Come From Engand.

It's been 236 mostly wonderful years since we fought and won our independence from our British cousins and in those 236 years we have become practically family again. So to celebrate our 236th birthday I thought I would salute Britain With what I consider the 10 best contributions she's made to the world.

10. Flush Toilet. Go ahead and laugh but can you imagine a world without one? We aren't talking something useless that we don't think we can live with out like a cellphone here. Unless of course you are one who enjoys disposing of your own waste. Thanks in large part to inventions like the flush toilet sanitary conditions that have historically lead to plagues and death no longer occur. Today for most of us the only reminder of how great the flush toilet is the odd tourist park outhouse and lets face it those things aren't place to tell your friends about...or use if you can help it.

9. Matt Monro. You know somebody is a great singer when they sing a jingle about bowling and you want to hear it over and over again. Thanks in part to being saddled with one of the most ludicrous nicknames in the history of the music business (the British Sinatra)  here in the United States Matt Monro was never a star and always regarded as a second rate Sinatra. The Truth is Monro wasn't an anything Sinatra but there weren't many singers in America or anywhere else for that matter, who were in Monro's league either.  Most of Monro's British hits Walk Away, Born Free, Softly As I leave You, etc were covered by American artists and on occasion Monro even got the better of the best of them.  Listen to Monro's versions of Born Free and Softly As I Leave You and then listen to Old Blue Eye's. Even the most ardent Sinatra fan has to admit Monro's versions are Superior. Monro whom is probably best known in the states for singing the theme song to the second James Bond film From Russia With Love deserves to have his music rediscovered in the United States and praised on it's own VERY lofty merits.

8. 70's Sitcoms That Became American Classics. Do the shows Till Death Do Us Part and Steptoe and Son ring a bell? How about All In The Family and Sanford And Son do those sound more familiar? That latter two classic American 70's Sitcoms came into the world as British sitcoms Till Death Do Us Part and Steptoe and Son. The British versions while still being comedy's were more dramatic than their American counterparts but with out British TV we would not have 2 of the best shows in the history of American Television.Of course with out the next invention from Britain on my list we wouldn't have any sitcoms, dramas, action shows, mysteries, or Westerns at least not that we could see with our eyes.

7. Television. OK maybe not as necessary as the flush toilet but life wouldn't be much with out it would it? Even if what's on the TV is in increasing frequency pretty much the same as what's in the Flush Toilet. Again for most of us life with out a TV is unthinkable although I can remember life with say 5 or 6 channels instead 9,765 of them. Unlike the flush toilet the TV has it's down side. We don't read anymore. We're fat asses, our imaginations are shit and we tend to gravitate towards things we either hate, make us mad, or depressed like cable news but even with it's huge downside the Television is our faithful friend always there when we need it and deserves it's rightful place on this list.

6. Peter Sellers/Pink Panther. Much like Matt Monro Peter Sellers left this world much too soon (both were 54) and he was a genius. Sellers had some brilliant movies outside of the Pink Panther Comedies Dr. Strangelove, The Mouse That Roared, Etc but his performance as the inept Inspector Jaques Clouseau would be his most recognizable role. The Pink Panther movies with out Sellers are ordinary to bad (look at how bad they've been since his passing) but with Sellers even the worst is solid entertainment.  A scene in The best (IMHO) Pink Panther film  A Shot In The Dark demonstrated Sellers genius. As a house full of people began to fight with one another Sellers simply turns around and looks at the Camera and it's all but impossible to not bust out laughing.

5. Family. Almost all of us have either family or ancestors who are British. Of course without them there probably wouldn't not have been us. I have an aunt who was born in England. Many of my Mother's people come from Scotland and the UK.

4. Beatles and 60's rock Music. The Impact the Beatles had on music can't be understated. In time even the Sinatras of the world who once mocked the flop tops were singing Yesterday and Something. Hell even Bing got in on the Beatles song book singing Hey Jude.  Of course after the Beatles came Gerry and The Pacemakers, The Dave Clark 5, The Animals, Herman's Hermits and The Rolling Stones. Soon for much of the 60's almost the entire pop charts were British. Of the groups that followed only the Stones would match (and in some cases surpass) the Beatles in terms of hit and staying power but the Beatles were first and the best and they paved the way for the rest.

3. Modesty Blaise. Born in the comic strip section of the London Evening Telegraph in 1963 Modesty  Blaise the brilliant creation of Peter O'Donell was a leader of a criminal gang who had retired rich and was now mostly on the side of good (she really always was) full time. Her sidekick Willie Garvin was a  hard edged man's man who had been a political prisoner but he always referred to Blaise as Princess and left no doubt which of the two was  really in charge. Blaise was smart, independent, she had lovers but belonged to nobody but herself and she could defend herself as well as any man. Modesty Blaise would be at her most popular in a daily comic strip that ran from 1963-2001 mostly in the UK but also in Scotland and a few cities in the US. O'Donell would pen 13 Modesty Blaise adventures that would become popular though not quite as popular as the man she was often compared to James Bond. Unlike Bond Blaise would not conquer the movie world either. There have been 3 attempts to bring her to film and all 3 have been failures. The closest and by default most popular of the three is the 1966 film Modesty Blaise which has it's fans but is mostly regarded by Blaise fans as an abomination. O'Donell who wrote the original script and novelization (  first Blaise novel Modesty Blaise) only to see it almost entirely ignored said it made his nose bleed. Today many people know Modesty Blaise from a scene in the Tarantino film Pulp Fiction. Tarantino a Blaise fan has said he wants to try and finally bring her to the big screen in a proper way. Hopefully he does.

2. James Bond. James Bond came into the world in 1952 the Brain Child of a war hero and journalist Ian Fleming. by 1957 the novel From Russia With Love would rocket him to stardom. By 1958 he would  become a comic strip character and while he was never as brilliant in the comic strip world as Modesty Blaise he would be durable enough to last until 1983. However of course it's the Films that made James Bond a star. Bond would reach full stardom in 1961 when JFK admitted to being a fan and listed From Russia With Love as one of his favorite novels. The first movie Dr. No was made in 1962 and through ups,  downs, 6 actors playing the main role, (officially) and countless lawsuits Bond continues. As an old generation grows up and bemoans the lack of soul in the new Bond films 2 from the new generation replace them. Bond's reached his movie peak in 1965 with Thunderball but he's doing better now than he has done since those spy craze days of the mid 60's and in-spite of the competition he's never really fallen off very far. Every 5 or 10 years a new Bondalike rolls through town and proclaims death to 007 but soon the imposter is all but forgotten and Bond rolls on. 60 years since his birth we are still getting new Bond books and 50 years after his big screen debut we're about to receive movie number 23 or 25 depending on who's counting. Long live 007.

1. American Football. The Greatest sport ever invented, yes even with it's inherent dangers, came from Ivy League college men who brought the game from Britain. In it's early days it was a combination of rugby and soccer but it would become something special. And that something would become the most popular event and social gathering in America. The championship of the game on the professional level is an American holiday. On the college level the game has never been more popular. In some areas of the country The south, southwest and yes  the state of Nebraska it's a part of the very fabric of our being. We live and die with our teams. It effects are health, well being, and even our economy.We ignore the  entire world for 3 to 6 months worth of weekends every year hating and loving every minute of it.  For millions of us it's September not January that we celebrate the new year. The great game is no doubt uniquely American and it grew up to greatness hear however there can be no doubt that the Mother of the great game was Great Britain and for that I and millions of others are eternally grateful.

I published three 0f Yakki's responses tonight on older blog posts. Just to let him know the threads older than a week have comment moderation because of the amount of spam for Viagra and Russian brides we were receiving. We love Ya and hope you feels the same about us.

Been a busy day over at The Dollars fruit-stand as they have been spending the day going after Ellen, Jonathan, and Auntie because they fell the need to defend Dollar and Blackflon over their jokes about rape. This is a blog that allows Blackflon admitted pedophile, Jefferey who admits to fucking horses, that one gutless anon shitbag who wrote on two blogs that he fucks great danes and Bob Peters whom I am pretty sure only fucks himself. Why would anybody be shocked that they have no problem with jokes about rape? Amazingly the biggest nut of the group doesn't seem to be Blackflon, Koldys, or Peters but instead seems to be Gray Hammy. I offered to give Gray Hammy Blackflon's own admission to being a pedophile but as yet she has not taken me up on that offer. The offer still stands Hamster. Of course this group of the worst and dimmest also seem to think Jonathan is Auntie. Oh and everybody else is Pat. Don't ask.Personally I don't think Ellen, Auntie, or Jonathan should bother with the special kids over at Dollars the work they do is far to important to waste to waste their time. Cigar Review Gurkha Assassin Toro

I don't know how Mother Nature is treating you but here in the river city we had a record warm day with the temperature coming topping out at a very UnJanuary 30th like 67 degrees. So I was fortunate enough to be able to go out and have an afternoon smoke in the great outdoors. My Smoke of choice was a Gurkha Assassin Toro with a maduro wrapper. The first Gurkha assassin I had I bought in a Wyoming tobacco shop across the street from our hotel however I can not remember if the town was Evanston or Rawlins. Anyway I smoked the cigar in Omaha and was quite impressed with it's flavor. So for Christmas I wrote on my Christmas list and received a box of Gurkha Assassin Toro's with a maduro wrapper. OK I'll come clean I bought the cigars for myself.

Now first thing when it comes to Cigars size CAN matter. Two cigars same brand, same line can taste vastly different if they are two different sizes. As a personal preference I am not as big fan of Churchill sized cigars as I am medium sized cigars. It's not that I dislike Churchill's so much as I find them to often be just too big for my preference. The Toro which comes in at 6X50 is a about a perfect size of Cigar for me. The first thing that grabs you about the assassins or any Gurkha line cigar for that matter is the box. This thing weighs a good 10 pounds and is to use a lame phrase super cool. Even if the cigars were duds the Box would be something anyone would be proud to own. Still people don't spend $140 or more for a bitchin' cigar box.

The Assassin is a full bodied cigar. Draw is excellent. This thing puts out the smoke output of your average 1977 Harlem arson fire. And the fact that I prefer a Maduro which is a darker wrapper that makes the cigar even fuller than say a lighter Connecticut wrapper. However it is also a very smooth smoke. Don't confuse strength of flavors with the strength of Cigar. A cigar with mild flavors can knock you on your ass and make you sick if it's a strong cigar and you aren't ready. And a full bodied cigar can by nice and smooth. The Assassin is case in point. As I said earlier LOTS of smoke. If you want to get your wife out of the house and she doesn't like cigars...just light this thing in front of her and she's gone. (NO I don't do that! I have a designated cigar room in the house where I smoke and the animals are not allowed in.)

The Assassin is a quick burner, which I prefer I don't like having to smoke for 2 hours to get halfway though a cigar, burns evenly and stays lit. Some Cigars I fight all the way to either keep it lit or have the thing burn evenly that is not a problem at all with the Assassin.

The ash holds up well on the Assassin. It's not a cigar that will catch you off guard with falling ash every other minute. The Ash will become quite long before falling if left unattended and most smokers prefer that. Construction is good. I had one cigar where the wrapper fell apart. That is a real pet peeve of mine. A Cigar that costs $10+ SHOULD have a solid construction and not fall apart. Yes with a handmade cigar sometimes it's bound to happen but it shouldn't happen as often as it does with many lines of Cigars.

So if you've read this far as you can probably tell I am very much a fan of the Gurkha Assassin Toro Maduro. It's joined Hoyo De Monterrey Excalibur #II and La Gloria Cubana Corona Gorda as my favorite smokes.

Arguing Politics With Family.

At the risk of ruining his on-line reputation The Count has to report that in "real life" he is not a combative person. Don't get me wrong. I am well aware of coming to the conclusion that the person I am talking to a shithead however unlike with online conversations I do not say wow you're really a shithead and start a row. I think it and walk away never to have anything to do with the offending shithead again. Sometimes when you're dealing with family and friends who are grabbing on to their inner shithead often times walking away and ignoring them is not an option. Neither is shaking them and asking what the fuck is wrong with you shithead? Sometimes it's an extremely awkward position to be in wanting to tell family or friends to get their heads out of their asses.

Somehow a wonderful conversation with in-laws turned into a conversation on those evil greedy teachers in Wisconsin who are making too much money because of their evil unions. Just minutes later the same person was telling me how evil the occupy losers are and how great those bankers are. The same person who told me the teachers were greedy told me that he was on the side of the bankers because "this is America and a person should be allowed to make as much money as they can".

First of all I am not entirely on the side of the occupy crowd. I agree with much of what they stand for but not all of it. Let's just say they have great ideals and wonder goals but their entire premise is not grounded in reality. I am 70% 80% in league with Occupy name city here but not 100% It was just assumed I was 100% in agreement because of my politics. Still I kept my cool and pointed out the seeming hypocrisy of saying the teachers making at most $50,000 are greedy and the bankers making millions are capitalist heroes. I asked how one could validate the seemingly contradicting positions. I am sure the answer I was given was great and made total sense to somebody somewhere they sounded like...well complete bullshit to me.

So how did I win the argument with out losing my shit? Ok how did I end the argument with out losing my shit? After I let my wonderful In-law explain his talking points fresh from Fox And Friends I said to him...

A Rash On My Leg And A Rash On Ohio.

I am not entirely sure how or where but somewhere most likely in Utah, Nevada or Arizona I picked up contact dermatitis. Now what that basically means is my left leg itches like a mofo (though I can't scratch it Doctors orders) and it's really red blotchy and sore. If it were a face it could do the 8 PM Eastern slot on fox news. I got some cream and some pills to take. I start the pills tomorrow. They are a steroid so by the end of the week my batting average will be up 200%.
